Safe Start Kit for Schools
The Safe Start kit is a
collection of education resources for use in secondary schools.
The package has been written so that
teachers can utilise the materials interactively
with their students.
The aim of Safe Start is to:
- Raise students’ awareness of occupational
health and safety issues before they enter
into vocational training and their careers
- Target years 9-12 Career Education
students and/or
- Provide resources for Stage 1 Tourism,
Work Education and other subjects.
Safe Start will enable students to:
- Explain the importance of occupational
health and safety
- Outline the responsibilities of employers
and employees
- Identify and assess hazards and risks in
the workplace
- Suggest ways of controlling hazards and
risks in the workplace
- Learn assertiveness strategies
- Explain how workers’ compensation
operates and
- Describe how rehabilitation assists a safe
return to work.
The Safe Start core information is in
four main sections:
- Prevention
- Common Hazards
- Workplace Relations and
- Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation.
Safe Start also includes:
- A comprehensive handbook with student
activities
- Linkages to the NT Curriculum Framework

The Safe Start resource is:
- Intended as a guide for teachers providing
OH&S training and
- A resource developed by NT WorkSafe with
support from the Curriculum Services Division of the Northern Territory
Department of Employment, Education
and Training.
