The asbestos licensing system will change in the Northern Territory with the introduction of the National Model Work Health and Safety Laws in 2012. Currently asbestos licenses are issued to an individual, under the new laws, a business will be licensed to remove asbestos. A business issued with the license must ensure that workers who are removing asbestos have undertaken training in the specified units of competency.
Transition arrangements for licensing of asbestos removalists under the new laws will be determined shortly.
The following draft Codes of Practice have been approved in principle and will be in final form prior to the commencement of the new laws.
