Retail and Hospitality
The Retail and Hospitality Industry combined is the most significant employment sector in the Northern Territory and is the largest industry for part time employment. A characteristic of this industry is the high level of young workers working in part time or casual positions.

Under the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), statistics are reported using the following two classifications:

  • Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurants.
  • Retail Trade.
ANZSIC has been produced by the Australia Bureau of Statistics and the New Zealand Department of Statistics for the collection and analysis of industry data. NT WorkSafe uses the classifications to report workplace health and safety statistics, including information on compensation claims, injuries and fatalities.

Main causes of injuries

In the Northern Territory, the three main causes of injury which resulted in a workers compensation claim being lodged in the Retail and Hospitality Industry were:

  1. Muscular stress (lifting carrying objects, putting down objects).
  2. Falls on the same level.
  3. Muscular stress (handling objects other than lifting, carrying).

Other Information

Young and casual workers

The retail and hospitality industry employs people who are at a higher risk of industry such as young, inexperienced and casual staff. Employers therefore need to consider age and experience as specific factors when identifying hazards and controlling risks in the workplace.
