Health and Safety Representatives
Health and Safety Representatives (HSR’s) are important in the workplace. The role of a HSR provides workers at the workplace an opportunity, to be able to participate in and be consulted about health and safety matters.

All employers are required by law to facilitate the reasonable and effective exercise by a HSR of the representative’s functions to:

  • allow a representative access to any part of a workplace where a member of the workgroup works
  • make available to the representative information the employer has on health and safety issues affecting members

Employers also have additional obligations to:

  • allow a health and safety representative to attend an appropriate approved course of training for representatives
  • allow the representative the necessary time off work to attend the course on full pay and pay reasonable costs associated with the representative's attendance at the course.  You have the right not to comply with the same request by the same representative more than once a year.

The list of rights and responsibilities in this information is not exhaustive. To find out more about your rights and responsibilities employers should refer to the legislation administered by NT WorkSafe or contact NT WorkSafe.
